UNDERSTAND WHO IS BEING ADDRESSED
Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law... (Romans 3:19).
One of the most important principles for understanding the Scriptures is recognising contexts and target audience. Some become confused in their study of God's Word when they read verses without considering their actual context, audience, and purpose.
Not everything written in Scripture applies to the new creation. The Apostle Paul demonstrated this clearly in Romans chapter three. After quoting several passages that described the condition of those under the Law, he made a remarkable statement: “Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law...” (Romans 3:19).
Did you notice that? The Law spoke to those who were under its jurisdiction. Paul wanted this understanding to be clearly established, and it’s vital because many have read the declaration, “...There is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10), and assumed it applies equally to everyone today, including those who are born again. But Paul wasn't describing the new creation in Christ. He was presenting the Law's verdict on those who lived under the old covenant. The context makes this unmistakably clear.
When you understand who is being addressed, the Scriptures become clearer and more meaningful. You learn to distinguish between the Law and grace, between the Old Testament and the New Testament, and between what was spoken concerning man's condition apart from Christ and what is true of those who are now in Christ. This prevents confusion and helps you to rightly comprehend and apprehend God's truth.
The Bible is a progressive unveiling of God's redemptive plan. Therefore, it's important to follow the flow of revelation in the Scriptures. Don't isolate a verse from its context and build your understanding around it. Study the whole counsel of God and allow Scripture to interpret Scripture. The Bible says, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).
As a child of God, always study and receive the Word in the light of your identity in Christ and the realities of the new creation. That's how God's Word produces faith, confidence and victories in your life.
PRAYER: Dear Father, thank you for the light of your Word and the ministry of the Holy Spirit who guides me into all truth. As I study the Scriptures, I receive understanding and insight into mysteries and realities of the Kingdom. I rightly comprehend, apprehend, and apply your Word, and I walk in the blessings, liberty and righteousness that belong to me in Christ Jesus. Amen.
